Experiment: Sherlock Holmes and the empire of the Vampires

The creature walked out the door with his fist, sending splinters in all directions. His hand, long nails and yellow, grabbed the sleeve of Dr. Watson, pulling him with superhuman strength. Through the crack was heard a chorus of grunts, manic laughter and howls that seemed to increase volume to perceive the proximity of a dam. Other clutches pounded and pulled the ribbon to break through. He tried to use the weight of his body to escape but that monstrous claw drew him inexorably. The mouth of being foul was a collection of sharp teeth. Holmes suddenly appeared beside him and unleashed a terrible blow with his sword, cutting cleanly through the forearm of the vampire. The cut fell to the ground member, consuming up to be reduced to a wreck twisted and black as coal. It heard an animal yelp, agony and despair. The infernal horde was silent for the first time ... .

In recent years there has been a trend in fantasy literature that involves taking historical or fictional characters and rewrite their adventures including those supernatural creatures, zombies and vampires generally. Examples are Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter , Lazarillo Z or the newly introduced Sherlock Holmes and the zombies Camford Alberto Lopez Aroca. There are many others, from Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn to Queen Victoria, through Dorothy Wizard de Oz .

In fact we could have used almost any other "big name" and the effect would have been similar.

homage is one thing and another to take an easy shortcut on the road to publication. A striking and recognizable character of labor-saving character development, help attract readers and makes any story more palatable, but it is like putting the creation crutches. It can even help you choose the publisher a manuscript among others, now it is fashionable gender. The formula of "famous + monster" is a cheap but it sells, is author's solution with little time or little desire to gamble on an original creation.

Maybe because the biggest challenge is always that, write something new, personal, that seems a copy of a copy and does not need "tricks" to come to life.

conclusion and end of the experiment, see what happens if the text of the principle replace the well-known name of the detective and his partner for another original. The effect is interesting:

The creature walked out the door with his fist, sending splinters in all directions. His hand, long nails and yellow, grabbed the sleeve of Duvall, pulling him with superhuman strength. Through crack was heard a chorus of grunts, manic laughter and howls that seemed to increase volume to perceive the proximity of a dam. Other clutches pounded and pulled the ribbon to break through. He tried to use the weight of his body to escape but that monstrous claw drew him inexorably. The mouth of being foul was a collection of sharp teeth. Blackburn suddenly appeared beside him and unleashed a terrible blow with his sword, cutting cleanly through the forearm of the vampire. The cut fell to the ground member, consuming up to be reduced to a wreck twisted and black as coal. There was a yelp animal, agony and despair. The horde was silent hell for the first time ... .
